Ma Poule Mouillée
About This Spot
Stepping into Ma Poule Mouillée feels like finding a little corner of Portugal nestled right in the heart of Montreal’s vibrant Plateau neighborhood. The rhythm here moves at an easy, unhurried pace — a bright and welcoming spot where the warmth feels genuine, as if the friendly chatter and honest smiles come from a place that’s been carefully nurtured over time. It’s the kind of place where the hum of conversations and the aroma of grilled chicken slowly roasting on the rotisserie create an inviting, comforting atmosphere.
Though the space carries the casual vibe of a fast food joint, it’s unmistakably more than that — a neighborhood gem blending the familiar with something thoughtfully distinct. Here, simple pleasures are reimagined with a Portuguese twist: plates arrive generously portioned, laden with tender chicken and savory chorizo that speak of tradition, paired with house-made sauces and surprisingly inventive takes on classics like poutine. The offerings aren’t just about filling the belly; they invite a moment to savor the layers of flavor and homely textures that remind you food is as much about the story behind it as the taste itself.
The menu itself hums with earthy, honest energy — a hand-held, satisfying kind of cooking where comfort meets bright, fresh ingredients, often balanced by a crisp house salad or a flaky pastel de nata that lingers as a sweet closing note. It’s this blending of approachable and authentic, hearty and fresh, that encourages both locals and visitors alike to return, drawn by its honest spirit and that unmistakable feeling of shared enjoyment.
In many ways, Ma Poule Mouillée exudes the quiet pride of a family-run spot — one that embraces its role as a welcoming table for the community. While the pace may pick up during busy hours, the service retains a warmth and straightforward kindness that makes every visit feel like coming home. Whether you’re in for a quick bite or lingering over a plate designed to satisfy and surprise, there’s a sense here that food is a vehicle for connection, for simple joy, and for the kind of local discovery that stays with you long after the meal ends.

We came to try their chicken/chorizo poutine after hearing good things about it. Service was okay, staff were generally friendly. The poutine itself came out okay. The grilled chicken was delicious, and sausage was flavourful, but the fries itself were cold and already made. It made eating the poutine itself difficult as the fries were cold and lacking in gravy. Overall, I would come back specifically for the chicken.

The food is amazing, prices very reasonable and portions are huge as per other reviewers but I want to highlight something else. The atmosphere of the place is that of warm, honest, honorable family business - a truly unique gem in our day and age. Taxes are included in all prices so you know exactly what you will be paying and when I went to pay with the card it was just the amount that I owed - no option to leave a tip, which means they actually must be paying their workers a decent wage. I live a bit far from Mont Royal but every time I'm in the area I'll definitely be popping into Ma Poule.

Damm were they trying to stuff me? Talk about this plate! They gave a lot of meat and for 15 dollars it was not bad! I wish the fries were a bit fresher and the sausage a bit warmer because when I bit into the sausage it was room-temp at most. I left no crumb = no waste :) 7/10 You need to try at least once

Pretty solid poutine! Never been much of a great poutine fan but I’d have to say the one I’ve had here left quite an impression and made me think otherwise. Most poutine sold are simple and plain with just the gravy and the cheese curds, but Ma Poule Mouillée manages to change that by putting a creative spin on their dishes by offering a wide selection of different toppings and combinations, of which have been interesting to see, and hard to choose. For myself, I had a La Scooby, which consisted of the regular poutine, with beef, deep fried pickles, bacon and cheese. It’s really good, and the staff here are also friendly and food comes out relatively quick! We did not have to wait for a table for 2, and thought we were lucky because the place was absolutely packed when we were seated. This also might be due to the bad weather at the time, but we were there around 1:30pm, on a weekend too. The seating area however can be a bit cramped, so I find myself having to shift my chair in and out constantly to let people pass through. Otherwise, I think it’s a great stop for poutine if you’re visiting Montreal! Worth every penny.

As a lover of Portuguese chicken, I had to try this place and I was not disappointed. The poutine is hands down one of the best deals in the city. The portion size was huge (easily two full, delicious meals), and the flavor balance was spot on. I expected something heavy or greasy, but even with the chorizo, it wasn’t overly fatty at all just perfectly rich and flavorful. The chicken itself was excellent, and the service was quick and friendly. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fresh, modern twist on classic poutine.

The poutine here is crazy, chicken and gravy create harmony favor in my mouth. The chicken is the best that I ever had. It’s so flavorful and juicy. With fair price, here would be your must when you visit Montreal.

Ma Poule Mouillée is always a great choice for Portuguese chicken and I find they have the best poutine in the city. For the price, you are getting a huge portion and everything is amazing. I give their poutine a solid 9/10 with the star being the chicken and the sauce. The cheese curds are very good and the chorizo is also a nice touch. The fries are pretty good but are the lowest point of the dish. I can’t express enough how good the chicken is, they nail it! If you come in the early evening, get ready to wait for a table but for lunch during the week it’s perfect.

If you're looking for the best Portuguese charcoal chicken in Montreal, this is it. The smoky aroma hits you the moment you walk in, and the flavor doesn't disappoint. I had the chicken and chorizo poutine, and the combination of the spicy piri-piri sauce with the salty cheese curds is a total game-changer. The chicken is always juicy, never dry, and that charcoal char is perfection. A must-visit every time I'm in the Plateau!"
